War Front or Examination session? JAMB wants soldiers deployed to UTME CBT Centers

Background
  • JAMB conducts UTME exams for students seeking admission to tertiary institutions (as if you didn't know that before!)
  • Prof. Ishaq Oloyede at a meeting with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Tukur Buratai in Abuja made the request to have troops on ground during the conduct of the UTME exams.
  • According to him, “this need became imperative to seek for security intervention from the Army, particularly in turbulent areas”
Our take on the matter
  • Yes, this is a good and proactive move considering that the Chibok girls were abducted while preparing for WAEC exams. Once bitten twice shy.
  • However, the psyche of these young students must be taken to consideration and the soldiers properly oriented not to 'overly' discharge their duty to protect the students and in turn harass the students as well. 'We know what we are saying'.
Conclusion
  • Thumbs up to the JAMB registrar for taking security of the candidates seriously.
