Honest Submission: Health Minister says FG not prepared for Meningitis outbreak.

“I also want to say that it (meningitis outbreak) was not unexpected. This is part of the meningitis belt in Africa, and since 2013, we’ve been having Type C, but this has been the worst outbreak. We never expected this magnitude, and this is where things went wrong.” - Prof. Isaac Adewole, Nigeria's Minister of Health

  • In Nigeria, there is currently an outbreak of Type C Meningitis in 19 states killing over 440 persons.  (read outbreak story here)
  • The minister had stakeholders’ meeting with the Governor of Zamfara State, Abdul-Aziz Yari (who said the outbreak is God'd punishment for the sins of his people- read that story herehttp://musingsamplified.blogspot.com.ng/2017/04/sensible-gov-yari-of-zamfara-state-in.html), and the Meningitis and Prevention and Emergency Response committee at the State Government House, Gusau.
  • He said that the essence of the meeting is  essentially to build confidence and assure the Nigerian people that we are on top of this outbreak.

Our take on the matter
  • We love your honesty and your pro-activeness having left the 'cosiness' of Abuja to see things yourself especially in Zamfara. Way to go Minister.
  •  Other public officials should take a cue from your crisis management approach
  • All hands must be on deck to ensure that this outbreak is contained as quickly as possible.
